Time Flies!

Well, at the moment time really does seem to fly by – one minute we were looking at stock for Christmas ideas, and then we were wrapping and posting like mad to keep up with the Christmas orders and then before we knew it Valentine’s day had come and gone and we are now looking at great new gift ideas for Mothers Day!

So I thought that I really should find some time to develop my idea of handmade personalised plaques and get them listed onto the website. I have been practising with different shapes of wood and colours and styles etc. and they have been selling very well on the stall, so now is the time to launch them onto Jaco’s Gifts online!

There are basically two types of plaques, the first are the ones that people request to be personalised with their own details, such as a baby plaque with the new baby name and weight and date of birth, or a wedding plaque with the happy couples name and date of wedding etc. and the second type are the ones that have slogans and sayings on “Sometimes I laugh so hard the tears run down my legs” type of thing!

You can choose the background colour, we have a few to choose from that work quite well and we will decorate the plaque to match the occasion, or if you have a specific request we will try and get that done for you.

I’m having great fun with these and it has been a nice break from working on the computer all of the time! My work table has taken a bit of a battering though, it is covered in bits of paint, but I don’t mind as eventually all the colours will meld into one and I will have a pretty colourful table top that is unique to Jaco’s!

Happy New Year!!

A very happy new year to all our customers - old and new, and we hope that 2013 brings you much happiness and good health.

So here we are, at the start of a new year, and wondering what the next 12 months will bring!

Maybe it is me, but did Christmas and New Year seem to go by a lot quicker this year? Maybe it was in part due to the fact that our son is getting older now (12 1/2) and spends more time with his friends and less time with us, so Christmas isn't as magical as it was when he was 5 and truly excited about Santa visiting!

He was thrilled with his present but once that part was over he was back onto his x-box to talk to all his friends and compare their "gifts" - but he emerged in time for lunch and did actually compliment me on my homemade from scratch roasties!

So in a way I was very glad to be able to re-introduce the Santa letters to our website again this year - I love making them and altering the story to fit each child and then spend ages decorating them with Rudolph's and stars and sparkles. It is nice to know that it brings a little magic to a child's Christmas, and I love hearing back from the adults when the letter has arrived.

I really did miss putting up the decorations and especially the tree and fairy lights - to me there is always something about the lights and the smell of the tree that is very reminiscent of a traditional Christmas, but we knew that we would be busy right up until Christmas Eve with last minute customers to the shop, and then after Christmas we would be busy with doing a stock take and researching our new lines for Valentines!

But I stuck to my resolution to try and be greener this year and sent everyone an email card instead of a card card and it seemed to work out quite well, and saved a bit on postage too!

So, its onwards and upwards for 2013 - we are planning to introduce more lines to our wedding, babies and birthdays categories and we will also be starting our own personalised mugs and plaques - made to order - so watch this space!

Thoughts on Mothers Day

Mother’s Day – the time when we celebrate the love and respect that we have for our mums.  After all, they do so much for us – from giving birth to us, to raising us and teaching us many of life’s lessons!

But let’s not forget about all the other “mums” out there too – the huge amount of women who play important roles in the raising of children. These mums tend to get overlooked sometimes – the “silent” mums if you like! Women, who for whatever reason, give their time, their hearts, their love and their commitment to raising a child that is not biologically theirs – stepmums, grandmums, aunts, foster mums etc – the list is endless.

I myself have had the pleasure and privilege to share my life with a wonderful child for the last 6 years, I have watched him grow from a small boy that loved to play games on the floor with small cars, to a pre-teen who wants to be out with his friends or on his x-box. I have spent endless hours doing homework with him, school projects and hours dedicated to learning the times tables!

I have nagged him to tidy up his room, praised him for all of his achievements and feel so very proud of him for the young man he is becoming. I’ve spent hours watching over him when he has been ill and wishing that I could take the illness away, and I am becoming an expert on listening for him in the night – when he was younger it might be because he was feeling ill – but now he is older it might because he wants to sneak a peek on his computer!

This young man has taught me so much – he has taught me that I can be a mum, and I know that there are thousands of women out there in the same position.

So let’s make Mother’s Day about remembering all mums, the ones we come from and the ones that are collected along the way – it’s a day to celebrate us all!
